The Metropolitan Museum of Art The Highlights
The Metropolitan Museum of Art, known colloquially simply as “The Met” presents over 5,000 years of art from every corner of the world for everyone to experience and enjoy. The Museum lives in three iconic sites in New York City - The Met Fifth Avenue, The Met Breuer, and The Met Cloisters. Millions of people also take part in The Met experience online. Since it was founded in 1870, The Met has always aspired to be more than a treasury of rare and beautiful objects. Art comes alive in the Museum’s galleries and through its exhibitions and events, revealing both new ideas and unexpected connections across time and across cultures. The museum is open daily. Get there around 11am - after the admission lines have dissipated. Note that on Friday and Saturday evenings, the museum stays open until 9pm.
Admission to the Met is pay-what-you-wish at the door and includes same-day access to The Met Fifth Avenue, The Met Cloisters and The Met Breuer. Tickets can also be purchased in advance online at the suggested donation of $25 for adults, $17 for seniors (65 and over) and $12 for students. Guided tours take place every 15 minutes and are free, making them an easy way to explore the collection with the benefit of a docent’s knowledge. The museum also includes suggested itineraries on its website. The Met Fifth Avenue contains several dining spaces, including the Cafeteria, the American Art Café and the Petrie Court Café. During warmer months, the building’s Roof Garden Bar, featuring impressive views of Central Park, offers cocktails and light fare.
