The Plaza Hotel The Highlights
It was once said, “Nothing unimportant ever happens at The Plaza.” One of America’s most celebrated hotels, The Plaza opened its doors on October 1, 1907, amid a flurry of impressive reports describing it as the greatest hotel in the world. Located at Fifth Avenue and Central Park South, The Plaza was designed by Henry Janeway Hardenbergh, who also designed the Dakota apartments, the Willard Hotel in Washington, D.C., and The Fairmont Copley Plaza in Boston.
No cost was spared. The largest single order in history for gold-encrusted china was placed with L. Straus & Sons, and no less than 1,650 crystal chandeliers were purchased. For over 100 years, The Plaza has been THE New York hotel to see and be seen. Kings, presidents, and stars of stage and screen have all gathered and stayed at The Plaza. The most lavish social affairs, as well as classic Hollywood films, have all used the legendary hotel as their setting. Some famous movies set at the Plaza include: Home Alone 2 (1992) - Macaulay Culkin (Kevin), stays at The Plaza un-chaperoned while he is lost in New York, and hijinks ensue; Sleepless in Seattle (1993) - In this classic romantic comedy, starring Tom Hanks, Meg Ryan, and Bill Pullman, The Plaza is featured when Pullman (Walter) stays at the hotel after arriving in New York. In a famous scene, he reunites with his fiancé Meg Ryan (Annie) in front of the Fifth Avenue entrance; and The Great Gatsby (2013) - The film has its climactic scene set at The Plaza.
While at The Plaza, do stop in at the Palm Court for some refreshments. For over 100 years, The Palm Court has been New York City’s iconic destination for Afternoon Tea. The Palm Court is a timelessly elegant setting for breakfast, afternoon tea, evening fare and crafted cocktails.
